The Malachi Lap Rug Project Exhibition

A donation of two bales of sheep’s fleece from a local farm sparked a community project at the Malachi honouring its history as a wool store and craft shop. Local fibre artists began combing, spinning, knitting, and crocheting lap rugs for our concertgoersin the cooler months! Headed up by Oberon U3A Creative Fibre Group and involving 51 wonderful community members, we celebrate their generosity and skills in a weekend exhibition showcasing the 51 beautiful creations.
On the label of each rug, there are four words: Crafting, Community, Companionship, and Creativity… all hallmarks of this project, and goals that we at the Malachi value.
For three years, the group has met fortnightly working together at the Malachi and at the Oberon Community Centre. The project reflects their love for the building and the rugs have been an expression of that affection and support.
Exhibition opening hours at the Malachi Gilmore Hall are Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April, 10am – 4pm and entry is free!
