Turning it up – Without turning it loose!

Turning it up – Without turning it loose!

March 23, 2025 Posted by admin The Malachi

We’re thrilled to announce that, thanks to a generous boost from the NSW Government’s Venues Unlocked: Soundproofing Grants for Live Music Venues program, we’re turning down the noise spill and turning up the volume – without disturbing our neighbours.

This grant will help us fund essential soundproofing treatments, making sure that live music can thrive inside the Hall while keeping things peaceful on the outside. It’s a win-win for everyone: we get to turn up our live music offerings, and the Oberon community gets to enjoy a state-of-the-art cultural venue without worrying about excessive noise drifting beyond the Hall’s walls.

If you know the Malachi, you’ll know it’s famous not just for its striking Art Deco architecture but also for its long history as a community gathering place. Built in 1937, the Hall has recently been revitalised as a vibrant hub for music, theatre, and the arts, hosting everything from classical concerts to contemporary gigs. But, like many heritage buildings, it comes with a unique challenge: how do you kit out a sound system in a hall that’s almost 90 years old and still meet the expectations of a modern audience?

That’s where this soundproofing grant comes in.

We’re incredibly grateful to Sound NSW and the NSW Government for their support. This funding means we can host more live music events, at the volume the music deserves, without worrying about noise escaping beyond the Hall. It’s all about finding the right balance – respecting our heritage, supporting live music, and being good neighbours.

The planned soundproofing upgrades will also improve the acoustics inside the venue, meaning performances will sound even better for both audiences and performers. It’s an exciting step forward for us and for everyone who enjoys the magic of live music here at the Malachi.

The Venues Unlocked program, delivered by Sound NSW, is designed to help live music venues like ours manage sound challenges while keeping the music alive in communities across the state. By supporting spaces like the Malachi, it’s helping to make sure cultural and heritage icons like ours remain vibrant and relevant for future generations.

So, next time you’re enjoying a gig at the Malachi, spare a thought for the soundproofing! Thanks to this forward-thinking initiative, the music stays inside the Hall – and we stay at the heart of Oberon’s creative scene. We can’t wait to share the next chapter of live music at the Malachi with you. Stay tuned for more updates and, as always, thank you for your ongoing support!
