SUMMARY:To Listen To Sing - Ensemble Offspring
DESCRIPTION:Oberon welcomes Ensemble Offspring back to the Malachi to perform To Listen\, To Sing\, a musical celebration of stories reflecting culture\, country and connection from almost 10 years of Ngarra-Burria: First Peoples Composers. \nOur To Listen To Sing concert program\, while not featuring the composers themselves on stage\, shines the spotlight on a whole raft of brand new music with works for flute\, clarinet\, cello and percussion and is a true celebration of a weaving of western art music and the oldest surviving culture on earth. \nNgarra-Burria:First Peoples Composers has built bridges for Indigenous musicians to step sideways into instrumental chamber composition over the past 9 years\, completely changing the Australian landscape of art music composers and importantly giving a new voice to First Nations composers. Guided by Artistic Director Dharug composer\, Dr Christopher Sainsbury\, Ensemble Offspring and guest mentors\, Ngarra-Burria supports a cohort of composers to develop and premiere new chamber works over a two year program. \nOur concert features alumni of the Ngarra-Burria program including prominent First Nations Composers; Brenda Gifford (Yuin)\, Nardi Simpson (Yuwaalaraay)\, Eric Avery (Ngiyampaa\, Yuin\, Bundjalung and Gumbaynggir) and James Henry (Kamilaroi-Yuwaalaraay\, Yorta-Yorta and Yuin).  In 2022 Ngarra-Burria received the Classical:Next Innovation Award and the ABC Classic album ‘To Listen To Sing’ was nominated for a Best Classical ARIA Award. \nGenerously supported by Live Music Australia. \nPerformers \nClaire Edwardes (Artistic Director\, percussion)\nLamorna Nightingale (flutes)\nJason Noble (clarinets)\nRowena McNeish (cello)

SUMMARY:Air Mass - Nick Russoniello
DESCRIPTION:An unmissable & immersive musical experience that will ‘shatter the glass between the musician and the audience’. (Limelight Magazine) \nNick Russoniello returns to the Malachi after his hugely popular show in January\, Echoes of the Picture Palace.   \nAir Mass\, a new concert experience by award-winning saxophonist & composer Nick Russoniello\, redefines the boundaries of the solo saxophone recital. Touring nationally in 2025\, this show combines extreme saxophone playing\, audience generated sounds\, live looping\, body percussion and more. \nExpect a seamless blend of lyricism and groove as the program moves between the elegance of Telemann and Debussy to the energy of beatbox & Daft Punk. The concert also features the world premiere of Russoniello’s new original composition Air Mass. \nRussoniello is one of Australia’s leading composer-performers. He has performed as a soloist with many of Australia’s premier arts organisations including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra\, Queensland Symphony Orchestra\, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra\, ABC Classic FM and Musica Viva Australia. His music for saxophone is also played regularly by saxophonists all around the world. \n“There are two markers of a Nick Russoniello world premiere: an overwhelming sense of fun; and a unique hook to shatter the glass between the musicians and the audience… He’s an exceptional performer and soloist – you almost have to laugh in astonishment at some of what he delivers.” \nLimelight Magazine \n“Not all world premieres are created equal. Hand on heart\, for me this was the best I’ve heard so far\, and judging by the audience reaction at the close of the piece\, everyone seemed to feel the same.” \nGet Tickets\nThis concert is supported by Live Music Australia.

Not to dazzle concert halls\, but to bare his soul. \nChopin’s Last Tour is a poignant and poetic solo performance told in the form of a personal letter. Enriched with live piano performances of Chopin’s most iconic pieces\, this remarkable show is written and performed by accomplished actor/pianist Phillip Aughey. \nSince its premiere in Edinburgh to standing ovations\, Chopin’s Last Tour has enchanted audiences across the globe with acclaimed performances in Edinburgh\, Adelaide\, Perth\, Sydney\, Melbourne\, Avignon (France)\, London\, Tallinn\, New Zealand\, and beyond. \nOn Sunday 12 April\, Phillip’s performance is partnered with award winning documentary “Chopin – I Am Not Afraid of Darkness” (2022\, 55 minutes). The film follows three world class pianists from very diverse backgrounds but are united in their appreciation for Chopin and the therapeutic potential of music. The film really speaks to how beautiful the arts are and the ability of music to bring people together who otherwise might be worlds apart. \nIf you’ve ever loved Chopin’s music\, or want to discover the soul behind the notes\, this is a must-see theatrical event. \nGet Tickets

DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\nRiot\, rapture and release \nUniting five leading contemporary classical voices Howl presents a performance of musical defiance and untamed brilliance. \nBest known as the musical mind behind Tim Burton’s dark cinematic worlds\, Danny Elfman’s mischievous Piano Quartet is a rare and revealing gem\, written with the same sardonic humour and manic intensity that define his film scores. \nCelebrating the strange and the sinister\, this performance also features Pierre Jalbert’s Howl\, a clarinet-led incantation of ritual and outburst\, alongside Missy Mazzoli’s folk-infused Tooth and Nail\, a wild work for solo violin and live electronics mimicking the overtones of a jaw harp. \nDescribed as “part-string-quartet-part-rave” Anna Meredith’s Tuggemo expands the ensemble into new sonic territories before a world premiere by Paris-born\, LA-based composer Daniel Wohl fuses electronic and acoustic forces into a three-dimensional sound world. \nProgramme: \nMissy Mazzoli\nTooth and Nail \nAnna Meredith\nTuggemo\nAustralian Premiere \nDaniel Wohl\nNew work for string quartet and electronics\nWorld Premiere \nPierre Jalbert\nHowl\nAustralian Premiere \nDanny Elfman\nPiano Quartet \nDaniel Wohl commissioned by The Royal Concertgebouw and Omega Ensemble.
