SUMMARY:Chopin's Last Tour
DESCRIPTION:It is October 1848. Frail\, heartbroken\, and in exile\, Frédéric Chopin arrives in Scotland at the invitation of Lady Jane Stirling\, his devoted student and unrequited admirer. A year from death\, in the shadow of failing health and emotional ruin\, Chopin takes to the stage one last time. Not to dazzle concert halls\, but to bare his soul. \nChopin’s Last Tour is a poignant and poetic solo performance told in the form of a personal letter. Enriched with live piano performances of Chopin’s most iconic pieces\, this remarkable show is written and performed by accomplished actor/pianist Phillip Aughey. \nSince its premiere in Edinburgh to standing ovations\, Chopin’s Last Tour has enchanted audiences across the globe with acclaimed performances in Edinburgh\, Adelaide\, Perth\, Sydney\, Melbourne\, Avignon (France)\, London\, Tallinn\, New Zealand\, and beyond. \nOn Sunday 12 April\, Phillip’s performance is partnered with award winning documentary “Chopin – I Am Not Afraid of Darkness” (2022\, 55 minutes). The film follows three world class pianists from very diverse backgrounds but are united in their appreciation for Chopin and the therapeutic potential of music. The film really speaks to how beautiful the arts are and the ability of music to bring people together who otherwise might be worlds apart. \nIf you’ve ever loved Chopin’s music\, or want to discover the soul behind the notes\, this is a must-see theatrical event. \nGet Tickets

Hand on heart\, for me this was the best I’ve heard so far\, and judging by the audience reaction at the close of the piece\, everyone seemed to feel the same.” \nGet Tickets\nThis concert is supported by Live Music Australia.

SUMMARY:To Listen To Sing - Ensemble Offspring

SUMMARY:So Much Myself: Piano Portraits
DESCRIPTION:A piano\, a virtuoso pianist\, and a multimedia journey where music\, video and speech collide in stories of extraordinary women. \nPianist Sonya Lifschitz and Australian composer Robert Davidson present a powerful series of musical portraits honouring female artists\, scientists\, and leaders across three centuries. Featuring video footage and recordings of the voices of Nina Simone\, Dame Nellie Melba\, Frida Kahlo\, Patti Smith\, Julia Gillard\, Rachel Carson\, and Clara Schumann\, this new\, important work weaves these extraordinary women’s words and stories into a rich musical tapestry\, with Sonya’s piano providing the musical setting. The melodies and rhythms within the voices reveal emotions beyond the words themselves. \nComing to the Malachi for a very special fundraising performance\, this concert marks the start of NSW Women’s Week (March 2 – 8). Tickets are available on a “pay as you wish” basis\, with all the proceeds going to Oberon’s Mums and Bubs group. \nNothing like it has come to Oberon before and  this performance is for everyone—not just women. Whether you are an experienced concert goer or a “first time for anything” type\, don’t miss this opportunity to be inspired\, provoked and moved by this extraordinary work played by this world class pianist. It is a great way to try something new – and be generous towards the new mothers in town. \n“Virtuoso pianist Sonya Lifschitz performed a breathtaking audio-visual work co-created with composer Robert Davison\, celebrating the often unsung repertoire and stories of women.” – Emily Thornton\, Canberra International Music Festival \n“It was a joyous performance in which old film clips\, excellent photography and imaginative music were blended into a fascinating program full of surprises.” – Emily Sutherland\, Adelaide Festival \nDoors Open – 2.30pm \nPerformance – 3pm\, 60 minutes\, no interval \nPost-performance gathering – stay for a catch up with a cup of tea or a “G and T”\, and meet the artist. \nThis concert is supported by Live Music Australia.

SUMMARY:Echoes of the Picture Palace
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\nSilent cinema brought to life with live music… \nIn a throwback to the days of vaudeville and the picture palace\, Nick Russoniello and the Golden Age Quartet reawaken the Malachi’s past and celebrate the great Charlie Chaplin in a concert that combines classic film and live music. Including pieces from Golden Age greats and new compositions\, the afternoon will be part history lesson and all entertainment. \nIn this cine-concert experience\, the Golden Age Project re-create the traditions of the silent film era. Although silent in name\, the films of the 1920s were shown in bustling picture palaces complete with live musical accompaniment. Echoes of The Picture Palace pays tribute to this lost tradition. \nThis programme features a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s The Immigrant\, a 1917 silent film regarded as one of the best in its genre. Chaplin’s bar fights\, seasickness\, a heated card game and budding romance are animated by original music composed by Nick Russoniello. Also screening is Australia’s earliest film Patineur Grotesque (1896) accompanied by a freshly improvised piano solo. \n \n  \nThis concert is supported by Live Muic Australia.

SUMMARY:Late\, Late at Night (The Rick Springfield Story)
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to get Tickets\nWritten by award-winning Australian playwright\, Kieran Carroll and starring rising Sydney performer\, Jackson Carroll (no relation) Late\, Late At Night is a pop-rock stage adaptation of Rick Springfield’s compelling and searing autobiography\, the New York Times best-seller\, Late\, Late at Night. Directed by Robert Johnson\, the show features over 20 fantastic Springfield gems from Zoot to the present day and includes many of Springfield’s 17 Top 40 American hits in the 1980s. \nSelf-penned\, the autobiography is written (except for the opening chapter) in chronological form: from the 1950s through to 2010. The work traces Springfield’s Australian and British childhood\, his early music days in Australia\, his rollercoaster ride in 1970s America and the huge pop and acting successes of the 1980s. This is followed by his fall from public view\, his mental health demise\, and finally\, the resurrection of Rick Springfield as an artist in the 21st century. \nThis two hours plus adaptation – much like the result of the autobiography – goes far beyond Rick’s popular pop image or what he is best remembered for on the 80s pop charts. Late\, Late At Night captures the heart and essence of Springfield’s major concerns and musings: depression\, God\, no God\, his parents\, self-motivation\, a long sustaining career\, love versus sex\, music versus acting\, his wife and sons\, the way America shaped him and what he left behind in Australia as he built his career to lead the seemingly glamorous and not-so-glamorous expatriate life. \nThis play adaptation is written as a two act\, one-man work. Springfield moves between the text and the songs throughout. Late\, Late At Night is a tumultuous and exhilarating journey of an Australian-American songwriter whose 17 top 40 hits in America with sales of 25 million albums worldwide make him one of Australia’s most successful musical exports of all time. \nLate\, Late At Night is an epic journey of a suburban boy whose journey to fame and fortune came with large personal costs. \nEvent starts at 7pm. \nTwo hour show with a 15 minute interval.

SUMMARY:100 years of Rhapsody In Blue
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centenary of George Gershwin’s tuneful hit\, Rhapsody In Blue\, and fasten your seatbelts for a fun ride! \nComposed in 1924 and controversial from the first\, Rhapsody In Blue challenged notions regarding the divide between classical and popular music.  Its relatively free form flew in the face of symphonic structure; and it combined freshness and originality with an irresistible accessibility. First performed on 12 February 1924\, our concert is (almost) to the day a century on! \nWell-known Canberra identity Carl Rafferty (piano) is joined by his virtuosic and rambunctious friends on saxophone\, clarinet\, trumpet\, flute\, and percussion\, to play jazz infused renditions of music by Gershwin\, Ravel\, Bernstein\, Shostakovich\, and others. \nThe programme will include Debussy’s Clair de Lune\, Bernstein’s overture to Candide\, Copeland’s El Salon Mexico\, Ravel’s Pavane… and\, of course\, Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue!
